Augusta jobless rate improves

ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said today that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the metro Augusta area decreased to 8.4 percent in March, down four-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 8.8 percent in February. According to a news release, the rate decreased because there were 1,100 new jobs in Augusta in March, mostly in the service-related industries, and there were fewer layoffs in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, and administrative and support services.
