Thomson runs its way past Lakeside

Thomson 51, Lakeside 27

THOMSON — The Bulldogs got a number of big plays from their offense, but it was the running game that stood out Friday night.

Thomson rushed 48 times for 528 yards en route to a 51-27 victory over Lakeside at The Brickyard.

Senior running back Chris Jordan did the majority of the damage for the Bulldogs carrying the ball 25 times for 328 yards.

“The freshman offensive line blocked great tonight,” Jordan said. “We work hard in practice and we accomplished what we did because we practice hard.”

Alongside Jordan was Torrie Battle, who had six carries for 114 yards. The Bulldogs threw only 10 times, but Chris Tutt completed eight of them including touchdowns of 38 and 64 yards.

Both teams were remarkably similar in the first half, with Thomson leading 15-11. Both suffered turnovers deep in their opponents’ end and came away with big scoring plays.

The Bulldogs came out quickly in the third quarter as Jordan went 64 yards to increase Thomson’s lead to 21-11.

The Panthers (0-2) came out throwing and Hunter Banks completed 14 of 17 passes for 236 yards. With the Panthers down 27-18 in the third, Banks ran a quarterback draw on third-and-4 from the Bulldogs’ 7, coming up just short. He came out of the game with a knee injury.

The Panthers’ Colby Ellis nailed a 22-yard field goal to cut the lead to 27-21 but the Panthers could not contain Jordan and the Bulldogs as they scored on three of their next four possessions.

Tom Proctor came in for the injured Banks and completed 5 of 7 passes for 103 yards.

“We were deflated a little when Banks when out,” Panthers coach Jarrett Troxler said. “Tom Proctor has been working his butt off all summer and I didn’t hesitate to put him in.”

Proctor responded well and gave the Panthers life early in the fourth when he rolled right, threw left and hit a wide-open Josh Jones for a 69-yard touchdown.

PLAY OF THE GAME: With 9:06 left in the second quarter, Thomson’s Ryan Kelly made a double move and got free down the sideline for a 64-yard pass from Chris Tutt.
