Firefighters don’t know yet what started a blaze Saturday night in a vacant house in the 1800 block of Ellis Street.
Fire crews responded about 7:30, according to Chris Reid, a battalion chief for the Richmond County Fire Department. It took 20 to 25 minutes to contain it, and there were no injuries.
“Right now, we have no idea what started the fire,” Reid said. “With the house being vacant, it’s tough to know right away.”
Two neighboring houses also were damaged.
“It melted the vinyl siding off one of the houses, but the damage looks worse than it actually is,” Reid said.
Local resident Gene Ballard said this is the second time the house has seen flames.
“About a month ago the same house caught fire,” Ballard said. “The first fire happened around 3 a.m., so I’m just happy this one didn’t wake me up.”
