Atlanta cop shoots gunman outside club

ATLANTA — Police say an officer opened fire on a gunman as large crowds of people left nightclubs in midtown Atlanta early Thursday morning.

Authorities say the suspect was hit in the chest. He was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. The officer was not hurt.

The gunfire happened shortly after 3 a.m. in a parking lot between Peachtree and Crescent streets, after nearby nightclubs had closed.

Atlanta Police Capt. Paul Guerrucci tells tell WSB-TV that officers assisting with crowd control as the nightclubs closed. He said they were flagged down by people who said there were shots fired during a fight in the parking lot.

Guerrucci said a second person was in stable condition after being shot in the leg. Investigators had not determined who shot that person.
