Two men are in jail after Richmond County Sheriff’s deputies caught them driving stolen vehicles to a local recycling center Monday, authorities said.
Renard Woodard, 36, of Richmond Hill West and Tavaris Hart, 22, of McCauley Street were charged with theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a motor vehicle with an altered VIN.
Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, deputies were called to Newell’s Recycling Center on Molly Pond Road in reference to two suspicious cars with windows broken out, Investigator Kendall Brown said in an email.
When they arrived, deputies stopped a Chevrolet Celebrity and a 15-passenger Chevrolet van, both with all the windows broken out, as they were leaving the recycling center.
An investigation revealed the original VIN numbers were removed and replaced with other numbers and the steering columns on both cars were “spiked,” meaning they had been hot-wired, Brown said.
