Cigarette dispute leads to gunfire at Augusta home

Deputies were called to an Earl Street home Thursday after an argument over cigarette smoke led to gunfire.

John White, 58, of Kentucky, told deputies he had been smoking a cigarette around 11 a.m. when Lonnie Rooks, 46, began arguing with him about smoking at Rooks’ mother’s home. According to an incident report, Rooks left the room, returned with a gun and fired a shot at the floor.

Police said Rooks’ mother had been lying in a hospital bed next to White when the shooting happened.

White told deputies he did not understand the anger because Rooks had not been angry when he previously smoked marijuana in the home.

Deputies were unable to locate the shooter.

White and other people inside the home were unable to agree on the name of the shooter, who might also be known as Lonnie Watson.
