Burglar enters Augusta liquor store through roof

Bobby Jackson

Deputies say they intercepted a man trying to steal liquor through the roof of a liquor store early Sunday morning.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy Wade Smith was doing his business checks when he noticed a man inside Mr. J’s Liquor Store at 856 Laney Walker Boulevard and called for backup, Lt. Robbie Silas said in an email.

The officers surrounded the business and arrested Bobby Jackson, 33, of the 800 block of D’Antignac Street, after he attempted to flee by throwing bottles at the officers. No one was hurt.

Jackson had cut a hole in the roof of the liquor store and had been attempting to steal bottles that way, causing over $2,000 in damage to the business. Officers found numerous bags of bottles already on the roof.

The Richmond County Fire Department assisted by bringing a ladder so the deputies could access the roof, Silas said.
