Augusta woman charged with taking neighbor's dog

A 61-year-old Augusta woman told authorities she “kidnapped” her neighbor’s dog because she believed it was being abused.

According to an incident report, deputies were called to the 2000 block of Greene Street around 1 p.m. Friday where a 50-year-old woman said her neighbor stole her mixed breed dog named Lucky from her yard and refused to give it back.

The victim’s neighbor, Karen Whitaker, of the 400 block of Tubman Street, has her own dog that she keeps in the house. She told authorities she believed Lucky was being abused because he lived outside and was kept on a chain.

Whitaker has called animal control several times to check on the dog’s welfare and was always told the dog was cared for and in good condition, the report said.

Whitaker was booked into the Richmond County Jail Friday on charges of theft.
