The man arrested for fatally shooting 19-year-old Darnell Lorenzo Brown at a July 4 barbecue last year pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter Monday.
Jerome Jerrod "Dirt" Sturgis was sentenced to 18 years in prison and five years probation by Superior Court Judge Carlise Overstreet, according to court records. Sturgis was initially charged with murder but it was reduced to the voluntary manslaughter charge.
He also pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated assault, stemming from his shooting a 12- and 19-year-old at the same barbecue, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Sturgis was apprehended later that month after fleeing to Columbia.
