The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Tammy Lee Smathers in connection with the January shooting of her husband.
According to a news release issued this morning by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, the condition of shooting victim Donald Smathers, 68, had improved to the point that he could discuss the incident with investigators.
Tammy Smathers, 48, is now charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime, according to the Sheriff's Office. She was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center and released on $80,000 bond.
The shooting took place Jan. 26 at 590 Briar Patch Lane, Warrenville.
An incident report shows that when officers arrived at the home shortly before 11 p.m. Jan. 26, they found Tammy Smathers standing on the driveway. She had told a 911 dispatcher that a 50-year-old man had shot her husband in the head. She told officers at the scene that the man had driven away in an unknown direction.
She told officers her husband was in the living room. When they entered the home, they found Donald Smathers lying on the floor on his right side. A deputy called out to the victim, and he tried to roll over onto his back, which allowed the officer to see that he was bleeding severely from his right side.
