Man arrested while cops investigate slaying

The search for a suspect in Saturday’s fatal shooting of a Swainsboro, Ga,. man in Hephzibah has led investigators to the arrest of a man on unrelated charges.

Michael Sims, 22, of 1044 Woodsedge Drive was arrested on theft and gun charges stemming from a separate incident, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew. Investigators visited Sims because they thought he may have been involved in Saturday’s shooting but have since determined he was not. He did, however, have warrants for his arrest on the other charges.

Frank Lilo Smith, 25, of 15 Wheeler Drive in Swainsboro, was found lying at the intersection of Woodcock Drive and Portland Street at 9:32 p.m. Saturday. He had been shot once in the lower back, according to a sheriff’s office press release. Smith was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

Chew said investigators have several leads in the case they are pursuing.
