North Ga. prisoners describe 12 hours without clothing

DALTON, Ga. — Inmates at the Whitfield County Jail say they were humiliated by being held naked for 12 hours and forced to spread cream on their bodies.

Whitfield County sheriff's Capt. Wesley Lynch the inmates were made to disrobe to combat an outbreak of body lice in one of the cell blocks, which had to be decontaminated. He says an ointment was applied to the inmates to kill the lice.

Inmates David Bennett and Jesus Gallardo outline their allegations in a federal lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Rome that seeks $5 million. They say more than two dozen inmates had to undergo the treatment. Sheriff Scott Chitwood, Lynch and other sheriff's officers are named as defendants.

Lynch said one employee was given a formal written reprimand after the incident.
