Beating suspect claims innocence

Franklin Wright also a suspect in 2 Aiken slayings

Franklin Wright, a suspect in the September beating and robbery of a Broad Street store owner and August slayings of two women in Aiken County, pleaded not guilty in Richmond County Superior Court Friday. 


Wright, whose hands were chained as he signed the plea, is accused of aggravated assault, kidnapping, armed robbery, criminal attempt to commit aggravated sodomy and gun charges in Richmond County.


He is accused of beating Jennie Hope in the head and arms during a robbery at Lotto Express at Broad and 13th streets. He is also suspected in the Aiken killing of two women whose bodies were found suffocated and set on fire.

Also arraigned Friday were Brandon White, 20, Johnny Patrick Thibodeaux, 20, and Carron Anthony Winfrey, 21, on charges of murder for the shooting death of Damion Alex Collier. Investigators have suspected that the shooting may be connected to gang activity. 


Savannah River Site resumes normal activity

A suspicious item was discovered Wednesday afternoon at the Savannah River National Laboratory which prompted emergency responseactivities.
