DECATUR, Ga. — A DeKalb County sheriff's deputy is reported in stable condition after being shot while serving a warrant.
Sheriff Thomas Brown says the deputy, Cpl. Gary Freeman, was attempting to serve an arrest warrant to 36-year-old Joshua Matthew Waller Sunday evening.
Brown says Waller is accused of simple battery against a neighbor.
The sheriff says Waller opened the front door and shot Freeman in the forearm. He says another deputy returned fire, hitting Waller in the shoulder.
Freeman, a 13-year veteran with the sheriff's office, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Brown says Waller barricaded himself inside his condominium but surrendered when he came out and asked for a cigarette. He was then transported to a hospital.
