SAVANNAH -- The Georgia State Patrol said Sunday a man who led troopers on a chase died when he plowed into a patch of trees in Savannah.
Troopers on Interstate 16 attempted to stop the speeding Infiniti QX4, driven by Luther Coney, 40, of Savannah, at 3:29 a.m. Saturday, according to State Patrol Cpl. Tommy Barron.
Coney did not stop, leading troopers through Savannah's midtown.
"He was driving recklessly, trying to elude troopers," Barron said. "He lost control, striking several trees and overturning."
The sport utility vehicle crashed at the corner of 52nd and Bull streets.
Coney, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Barron said. A passenger, who wore a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.
