Fred Nelson and Glenn Rodriguez grew up attending the same schools, playing the same sports together.
On Wednesday, the Laney teammates signed to play the first phase of their collegiate careers together. At the school’s gym, Nelson and Rodriguez penned their names to offers from Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, Ga.
“Me and him grew up together,” Rodriguez said. “It’s really going to be fun.”
Nelson, the first member of his family to attend college, anchored the offensive and defensive lines for the Wildcats, who went 8-4 this past season. Rodriguez played several defensive positions, finishing with more than 100 tackles.
“This is a good experience,” Nelson said about signing day. “I’ve got all my family and friends out here showing love.”
For Rodriguez, who is currently taking care of his sick mother, signing to play college football gives him optimism.
“Coming from where I come from, you don’t really think of days like this,” Rodriguez said. “You really can’t imagine how I feel on the inside. It just gives me hope for the future.”
