Corley, a shortstop who led Lakeside in hitting last season, is the only freshman to sign with the Peach Belt Conference team this year, joining four junior college players.
“I chose them over a lot of places because I felt it would get me to the next level,” Corley said. “I feel like we can win a national championship there. (Coach Calvain Culberson) is a great guy. I feel like I’ll love it there and I’ll fit in just fine.”
Corley was first team All-Region 2-AAAAA and first team all-county in 2013. He was named Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention and participated in the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in Jupiter, Fla., in October.
Corley will follow in the footsteps of former Lakeside standout and current Armstrong Atlantic senior catcher Clayton Miller.
NORTH AUGUSTA: Chaz Davey and Ryan Lark signed to play baseball at Erskine.
Davey and Lark, a pitcher and catcher combination for the Yellow Jackets, will play for coach Kevin Nichols at the South Carolina college.
“We’ve played with each other for a long time now, since (recreation) ball, so it’s good for familiarity, knowing another teammate,” Davey said. “It’s nice to have someone up there you know.”
SOUTH AIKEN: Golfer Alex Handy signed with South Carolina.
As a junior, Handy helped the Thoroughbreds’ boys golf team win the Class AAAA state championship. He shot 227 over the three rounds to tie for 12th individually at state.
AUGUSTA CHRISTIAN: Pitcher Michael Weiknser signed to play baseball for Division II North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.
EVANS: Pitcher/first baseman Garrett Wilkinson signed to play baseball with the Chipola College Indians (Marianna, Fla.), a member of the Panhandle Conference. Brice Harrison signed to pitch with the University of North Georgia Nighthawks (Dahlonega, Ga.), a member of the Peach Belt Conference.
