Dear Amy:Why does the ozone layer need our help? Jesse, Somerset, KY
Dear Jesse:The ozone layer is part of the atmosphere above Earth. It's kind of
like a shield that protects us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
It's dangerous because UVs can cause skin cancer. Scientists say there is
less ozone now because of some kinds of household products that people use.
If you want to learn more, there is a good Web site called the Environment
School Kit at http://www.iinet.net.au/%7Eecwa/skoolkit.html
Dear Amy:: Because I'm 8 years old, my mom says I can't go just anywhere I
want on the Internet. How come? Melanie, Grand Island, NE
Dear Melanie: Your mom is right. When we got our home computer connected to the Internet,
we had a family meeting about how to use it safely. My dad said for us to
use the same rules on the Internet that we use when we walk home from
school. Some of our rules are like telling your folks where you are going
and to go straight there. And don't talk to strangers without talking to
your parents first. Some places are for adults and if it makes you feel
uncomfortable, you probably should not be there. When I end up somewhere I
don't want to be, I click on my home page button and I'm back at a safe
place. You and your parents should check out Stay Alert, Stay Safe at
http://www.sass.ca/safe.htm for ideas about your own family rules.
