Dear Amy:What does http://www. mean? It's always at the beginning of a URL.-Jamie, Minneapolis Dear Jamie:As you know, a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the Internet address of a Web site. The http at the beginning of the address tells your computer to speak a special language, called HyperText Transfer Protocol, which is just for the World Wide Web. The :// (colon, slash, slash) separates the protocol from the rest of the address. The www isn't required. It is just a common name that Webmasters use to identify their World Wide Web site on the Internet. Dear Amy:: Why don't you tell kids where to get their own homepages? There are many places that allow free pages and the kids don't have to know HTML -Nick, Lexington, KY Dear Nick: Great idea! I get a lot of questions about learning HTML, but there are Web sites to go to if you just want to try making your own home page. It's easy. Little kids will like the one Lego, but I like WebBuilder. You can load your own pictures and words, check out your page and then make changes or add more stuff later. It's designed for schools, so make it a class project. Teachers can do it, too. But if you want to learn HTML, go to Small Planet's Create Your Own Web Page.
