Dear Amy:Why do so many sites require Netscape? What is Netscape? --Carem, El Paso, TX

Dear Carem: Netscape is an Internet browser. There are others like Mosaic, Spyglass and Explorer. Currently, Netscape is the one most people use. Some Web sites require the latest version of Netscape because it allows them to do the things that other browsers can't. For example, the Cells Alive site (this issue) has animated gifs, which are like little movies. If you don't use Netscape 2.0 or another browser that supports animated gifs, like Explorer 3.0, you can still view the site, but not the animations. To download a free copy, go to Netscape.

Dear Amy: It took a long time to download a sound file from a site on the World Wide Web, and when it finished I couldn't play it. What can I do?-Daryll, Westborough, MA

Dear Daryll: When you click on a sound link, you ask the server computer to send you a sound file. They can be really huge. The Web site should tell you the size of the sound file right next to the link. If you use a modem, choose sound files smaller than 200K. Once you get the file, you will need a helper application like Sound Machine for Mac or WHAM for PCs. Many Web sites that include sounds have links to places where you can download the helper application for free. Shareware applications that I use are: Sound Machine for Mac, or WHAM for Windows.
