Hang Out at Thomas Jefferson's House
Surf to Monticello and get to know Thomas Jefferson in a
way history books don't make possible. For instance, did you know that the
third president of the United States made delicious ice cream? Did you know
that he was an inventor, a great gardener
and a grandfather who called
politics the ''hated occupation"?
Learn about a typical day in the 18th
century, and don't miss the Fun Facts on your trip to Monticello,
Jefferson's home in Virginia. Go, and see the personal side of one of
America's most interesting people.
See Cells in Motion at Cells Alive!
Wow! That cell just ate a microbe for lunch, and you saw it, from first
bite to last! At Cells Alive,
jump into a site in constant motion with downloadable videos and beautiful
still photos of human cells. Watch your white blood cells in battle, and
see how your body makes antibodies. What happens when your body is invaded
by a virus? Cells Alive lets you see, making available a view seldom seen
of the never-ending happenings inside the body. One of the most awarded
sites on the Web is waiting for you to come take in some fantastic sights
of your own internal workings, so point your favorite browser to Cells
Alive, and be amazed by the everyday activities of human cells.
The Fun Site
What do you want to do today? Sing? Play games? Draw and color? At the Fun
Centre you can do all of this
and more! Go to the Music Room and find the words to a song you already
know, or make up your own words-interactively. Try playing along to the
music by making a Cardboard-Tube Kazoo or a Spoon Bullroarer. Or pick up
some new Knock! Knock! jokes and figure out some riddles. Do you or your
friends know how to play Coffee Pot or This Is My Nose? Find out, at the
Fun Centre. And, if you have a game or idea you like, submit it so other
kids can enjoy it, too! Have fun!
Remember, CyberSurfers!
CyberSurfari begins at 3 p.m. (edt) on October 22!
Check it out at CyberSurfari.

Dear Amy:Why do so many sites require Netscape? What is Netscape? --Carem,
El Paso, TX
Dear Carem: Netscape is an Internet browser. There are others like Mosaic,
Spyglass and Explorer. Currently, Netscape is the one most people use. Some
Web sites require the latest version of Netscape because it allows them to
do the things that other browsers can't. For example, the Cells Alive site
(this issue) has animated gifs, which are like little movies. If you don't
use Netscape 2.0 or another browser that supports animated gifs, like
Explorer 3.0, you can still view the site, but not the animations. To
download a free copy, go to Netscape.
Dear Amy: Why do you need a modem to get on the Internet? --Robbie, Brooklyn
Center, MN
Dear Robbie:A modem is like a special telephone that only computers can
use. To connect to the Internet, your computer has to use a modem to make a
call to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP server computer answers
the phone with its modem and then checks to see if you are a customer. If
you are, it connects you to the Internet. When you call in, you are making
a real
connection over a telephone line. You become part of the Internet, too.
It's pretty cool.
