Surfari: An On-line Treasure Hunt
Cyber hunters, check your trusty weapons. You'll need a vehicle (a computer) and plenty of ammunition, like deductive reasoning, logic and
plain common sense, to solve these on-line riddles. Enter the jungle at
and join the CyberSurfari '96 contest
for
individuals and school teams. Visit sponsors and outposts to solve
puzzles
and log in the hidden treasure codes. You and your school can win cash
and
prizes, from computers to t-shirts. The CyberSurfari '96 contest begins
on
Oct. 22. CyberSurfers have two weeks to find the treasure codes. Don't
fear; with a little practice even greenhorns will discover how easy it is
to play the digital treasure hunt!
You Can Vote!
Who says you're too young to cast a vote? Go to KidsNet,
become an educated citizen,
and then cast your vote for the candidate you deem most fit for the job!
Piloting the United States for the next four years is a huge
responsibility, and you, as a future adult, need to know all about it.
Did
you know that even if a candidate gets the most votes, she or he can
still
lose the election? Who chooses the president if no candidate wins a
majority of Electoral College votes? Find out, and don't forget to cast a
ballot, at KidsNet Election '96, where your vote counts!
Interactive Science Experiments
There really is ''Big Time Science Fun'' waiting for you at the Ontario Science Center
when you click on the ''Interactive Zone" button.
Control your own experiments to simulate mixing colors with light or with
crayons. You can listen to the beat of a healthy heart and compare it to
a
heart that has suffered a heart attack. OK, major yuk-the exploding zit!
You'll need the Shockwave plug-in to play with all the experiments (see
Ask
Amy), but that's easy. There is a link to download it on the Web site if
you need it.
Join the 4Kids Detectives
Be a 4Kids Detective!.
When you know the answers to these questions, go to 4Kids Detective!. Here are the questions:
- What time of day does the CyberSurfari start?
- Who appoints the Electoral College?
- Which country houses the "Big Time Science Fun" site?

Dear Amy:I went to this Web page and some of the things I clicked on
didn't work. The computer said I needed a plug-in. What's that?-Karin,
Lynchburg, VA
Dear Karin: Some Web sites offer special downloadable files that are
animated movies or sounds. They are very cool and worth checking out.
Plug-ins are software that extend the capabilities of your browser
software
so these movies or sounds play within the browser window.
Most of these Web sites have a link to a place where you can download
what
you need. Helper applications do the same kind of thing but they are like
running another program in addition to the browser. This page explains
explains all the Netscape plug-ins and helper applications .
Dear Amy: I am working on my school's Web page. Do you have any
suggestions
on what I should do?-Elliot, Lafayette, IN
Dear Elliot: There are lots of things you can do. Some basics are
pictures
of your school, the school's mascot or logo and maybe a description of
your
town or community. Lots of schools have calendars of upcoming events or a
favorite links page made up of suggestions by your fellow students and
teachers. To see what other schools have done or for some help, go to Web 66.
