Eugene Lee presses his hands against the red clay track and crouches. With his feet in the starting blocks, he reminds himself that this is the biggest race of his life. Eugene Lee is a 13-year-old sprinter from Sego Middle School and is already being scouted by Florida State University and other coaches around the country. Photo by Steve Shelton/Staff This is Eugene's Olympic dream, one he wants to come true in the 2000 Olympic Games. Eugene Lee, an eighth-grader at Sego Middle School, has been running track and training with an Olympic goal in mind for seven years.
``I started running in second grade because my PE teacher told me he thought I should do track and field for the recreation department. So I did,'' Eugene said. ``I started practicing with the recreation department and then running in school competitions.'' In his first year of running with the Rollins Elementary School track team, he won first place in the 100-meter race. He has also been to the Georgia Junior Olympics competition five times and has made it to all championships. At his first Junior Olympics he won first place in the 100-meter race. Last year he won first place in the 400-meter relay. Winning keeps him running, he said. ``Once I started running and winning, I started liking it. My hopes are to compete in the 2000 Olympics in Australia because some people never get the opportunity to go. I want to be one of the first people in high school in Augusta to go,'' he said. Eugene has dreams of winning gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter races. He also wants to break the world record of 9.84 seconds in the 100-meter race, set at the Olympics Saturday by Donovan Bailey of Canada. ``I'm 13 years old and I run a 10.75, 100-meter. With more training, I think I can get to 9.6 by 2000.'' Determination and motivation is what it will take. That, Eugene has. But he also makes running a little fun. ``I run to entertain and make people happy. I give them what they want. But when I'm in the starting blocks I put a lot of pressure on myself so I can run faster. I don't want to be relaxed in the starting block because I want to just run, run, run,'' he said.
