Dear Amy:Some Web sites have pictures that change or move. How do they do that?-Cathy, Redmond, WA

Dear Cathy: Whenever you see stars twinkling, letters flying into mailboxes, and company logos spinning on the Web, you're probably looking at an animated gif. They are kind of like little movies. Basically, they are created the same way that cartoons are made. When a series of pictures (each picture is just a little different) is displayed really fast, you think the image is moving. If you want to learn how to do it yourself, go to http://iawww.epfl.ch/staff/Yves.Piguet/clip2gif-home/GifBuilder.html

Dear Amy:: At my school, my reading class has to do a report on a desert animal. I found some information on my animal on my computer. If I copy it, would it be plagiarism? -Summer, Middletown, PA

Dear Summer: That's really an important question, and it's hard to figure out, too. If you just copy someone else's writing to your computer, that's OK. But, it's called plagiarism when you say that the writing is yours, and it's not. When you find words that describe exactly how you feel from the Web or from a book, you should say in your report who wrote it and where you got it. It is important that you tell who did the hard work. Ask your teacher or librarian how to give credit to a writer or go to http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/plagiarism.html for more information.
