Charles Sharpe, 65, a Wagener farmer, businessman and former Republican legislator, was indicted last week on federal charges of extortion, money laundering and lying to investigators in connection with alleged attempts to convince local law enforcement officials, including Mr. Hunt, that cockfighting at the Carolina Club was legal.
