Modern, period: The Buttermarks made major changes in the kitchen area. The space now includes granite countertops, modern appliances and custom-built cabinetry. "When you have a period house you try to do things in the period, but we're living in the 21st century and we like to have lights and air conditioning and dishwashers and all those modern things," Mr. Buttermark said.
