BRUNSWICK, Ga. -A former cult member told a jury Wednesday how the group transformed from a Muslim commune in New York to an extremist sect that groomed girls for sex with its leader, Malachi York.

Mr. York, originally a Muslim cleric in Brooklyn, is accused of molesting as many as 13 girls and boys and bringing them to the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors compound in rural Georgia for sex.

The woman who testified Wednesday, now 28 years old, said Mr. York methodically broke down girls' inhibitions as he prepared them for sex with him.

Mr. York would give the girls special privileges, such as soda, pizza and television, she said. Then the girls would be moved on to pornographic movies and sex toys.

Mr. York, 58, faces 13 federal counts of child molestation and racketeering on accusations of using his power as leader of the Nuwaubians to have sex with children between the ages of 5 and 17.

Florida police arrest molestation suspect

STATESBORO, Ga. - A convicted sex offender suspected of child molestation in Statesboro has been arrested in Florida, police said.

LeSamuel Palmer, 23, was wanted by Statesboro police on charges of criminal attempt to commit rape, child molestation, aggravated sexual battery and kidnapping.

He was arrested Saturday in Brevard County, Fla.

Because he faces a probation violation in Florida, it might be some time before he is extradited to Georgia, police said.

Suspect is accused of hunting hit man

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A man awaiting trial for molestation charges is now accused of seeking a hit man to kill his alleged victim, police said.

Torrey Borders was awaiting trial in Gwinnett County jail on charges that he molested his girlfriend's 13-year-old daughter.

He now faces additional charges of soliciting to commit murder. A confidential informant told police last month that Mr. Borders was searching for a hit man to kill the girl, police said.

Officers are caught playing cards on duty

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Five uniformed police officers and a trainee in Greenville who were supposed to be patrolling the streets were caught playing cards at a court building, police said.

Ten to 16 uniformed patrol officers were supposed to be on the road the night of the incident, so almost half of the city's uniformed police force could have been playing cards.

Officials said Tuesday they would take action against the officers.

Authorities arrest 2, hunt 1 in slaying

YORK, S.C. - Two men have been arrested and police are searching for another suspect in the death of a man in York who was shot at his home in March, authorities say.

Police suspect Willie Cunningham, 47, who was shot in the chest and right leg March 16, ran from his attacker into the street, where he collapsed.

Three men have been charged with murder, armed robbery and criminal conspiracy in Mr. Cunningham's death. They are Antonio Javar Williams, 18, of York; Jaleel Page, 20, of Rock Hill; and Lamont McCollum, 19, of Gastonia, N.C.

Mr. Williams and Mr. McCollum are in custody. Police are searching for Mr. Page.

Police chief's remark upsets councilmen

CHARLESTON, S.C. -Three Charleston city councilmen want police Chief Reuben Greenberg to apologize for using profanity in a comment about black-on-black crime.

Mr. Greenberg made the statement in The (Charleston) Post and Courier in a story about 2003 homicides.

"I refuse to take responsibility every time one black son of a bitch kills another," he was quoted as saying.

Councilmen Kwadjo Campbell, Wendell Gilliard and James Lewis, all of whom are also black, said the remark was an insult.
