Icy weather blew into the region on Sunday, turning the cold rain into sleet in Augusta and snow north of the city.
Locally, police reported bridging icing over as the rain and sleet hit the cold pavement, while in northern Georgia the weatherman predicted up to three inches of sleet or snow by morning.
Acting Superintendent Harvey M. Duncan of the Richmond County school system said late Sunday night that schools would be closed. Schools in Columbia, McDuffie, Aiken and Warren counties also planned to close.
