Aquinas earns first-round bye in playoffs

The Class A private and public football playoff brackets were released Monday, featuring three area teams bidding for postseason runs.

Aquinas earned a first-round bye in the private bracket after shocking previously undefeated Stratford Academy 30-27 for the Region 7-A title this past Friday. The fourth-seeded Irish will play host to the winner of this week’s matchup between Mount de Sales and Darlington.

They lost to Mount de Sales 14-3 at home earlier this season but previously won three in a row against the Cavaliers. They’ve never faced Darlington.

Lincoln County earned the 15th seed in the public rankings and will play host to Taylor County in the first round Friday. The Red Devils enter the playoffs on a five-game winning streak, including key victories over Aquinas and First Presbyterian the past two weeks. Taylor County enters the playoffs 8-2.

Washington-Wilkes picked up the 16th seed and final home playoff game for the first round. The Tigers, who are 6-4, will play host to Chattahoochee County on Friday. The Panthers are 7-3.
