Laney-Josey rivalry is game of the week

The game may not determine playoff seeding this year, but the biggest annual city rivalry in Augusta is back and always anticipated.

Josey will play host to Laney on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week.

The two will meet in a rivalry that dates back decades and is always circled on the calendars of city football fans.

The series has featured legendary players, coaches and games in its long history.

This season’s matchup will be for pride. Neither team has a chance to make the playoffs in the final game of the regular season, with Laney sitting at 2-7, including 2-4 in Region 4-AA, while Josey is 1-8, 0-6.

Laney leads the all-time series 37-14, including 14 of the past 15 and seven in a row. Before that, Josey won seven in a row. The Wildcats have shut out the Eagles six consecutive years.
