A game annually circled on the area high school football calendar will again be a statewide focus with major implications.
Burke County will play host to Thomson on Friday night in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The game tends to be one of the area’s best each season. The two are among the most successful and respected programs in the area, and both are state ranked and undefeated. The game will help determine the Region 3-AAAA champion.
No. 2 Thomson is 7-0, including 3-0 in the region, and is coming off a Class AAAA state championship appearance. A stable of running backs led by Tyrek Braswell and Bubba Murray, combined with veteran quarterback Mills Ridings and defensive back Christian Tutt, make for another deep and talented Bulldogs roster.
No. 7 Burke County is 8-0 and also 3-0 in the region. The Bears have thrived off their power spread offense that produces eye-popping rushing totals each week, resulting in more than 30 points in all eight games, including two games in the 60s. Bill Knight leads under center while several athletes end up with multiple touches each week.
Burke County has a slight 17-16 edge in the all-time series. Thomson has won the past two, including a 20-7 victory at The Brickyard a year ago for the region title. The Bulldogs haven’t won in the Bear Den since 2012.
