One of the area’s most anticipated games of the year is set for this week at the Jackets Nest.
South Aiken will visit North Augusta on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week. The matchup of two of the area’s better teams features major region implications and will likely be a statewide focus.
The two will meet to determine the Region 4-AAAA frontrunner with a clear path toward a region title. South Aiken took that title last year with the help of a 30-20 win over North Augusta on its way to a state semifinal appearance.
The fifth-ranked Thoroughbreds enter 6-1 and 1-0 in the region after routing rival Aiken 51-10 two weeks ago. They continue to sport a high-powered offense with senior quarterback Cody Boynton and senior running back Chris Roberts leading a stable of athletes, while the defense is equally strong.
The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets are off to their best start in years at 7-0, including 1-0 in the region after beating Airport 47-7. They boast one of the quickest offenses in the state with Landon Washington, Derius Gibson and DeJuan Bell leading the way.
South Aiken’s victory last year was its first in the series in 10 years. Three wins in a row over North Augusta between 2004-06 was also the last time the Thoroughbreds beat their region opponent consecutively.
