A Columbia County rivalry takes center stage this week with big region implications.
Greenbrier will play host to Lakeside on Friday in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The upstart Wolfpack are 5-0 for the second consecutive season, but they’re looking to turn a corner within the program by keeping the win streak alive into region play. After starting 5-0 last year, they lost four in a row in October to miss out on a playoff berth.
Three of those four losses were by a touchdown or less, however, and Greenbrier continues to trend in the right direction under coach Tony Kramer. Star running back J.Q. Brown and quarterback Hayden Harrison are leading a consistent offense, while they have one of the top producing defenses in the area.
Lakeside is at the opposite end of the record at 0-5, but as last season showed, it’s a clean slate when the region schedule starts. The Panthers lost their first five in 2016 before reeling off three consecutive region wins to make the playoffs.
Lakeside is 12-7 all-time against Greenbrier. The Wolfpack last beat their county rival in 2006. Last season’s 7-0 Lakeside win was the closest scoring margin in the series since 2008.
