An annual rivalry between area South Carolina programs returns this week with plenty of talent on both sides.
North Augusta will play host to Strom Thurmond on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week.
The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets are rolling at 4-0 with quality wins over Lakeside, Evans, Lexington and White Knoll. They’re averaging nearly 40 points per game behind one of the quickest offenses in the state, while their opportunistic defense is capable of racking up turnovers.
The Rebels won their first three before falling to Emerald 26-17 this past Friday. What’s typically a high-flying, spread offense is more physical on the ground this season behind Jaquan Edwards, who had 539 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in his first three games. The defense matches that physicality with a tough front seven, which will have its hands full against North Augusta’s talented offense.
North Augusta owns the series, but Strom Thurmond is always capable of making it a thriller. The Rebels ruined the Yellow Jackets’ turf debut in 2015 by beating them 35-13, but North Augusta responded last season with a 41-38 victory in triple overtime on the road.
