Lexington visits North Augusta in game of the week

An annual matchup of former region foes with loads of talent comes to the Jackets Nest this year.

North Augusta will play host to Lexington at 7:30 p.m. Friday in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week.

The two met in Class AAAA region play for years until Lexington moved up to Class AAAAA a couple years ago. The two sides now maintain their annual series in nonregion play with often exciting results.

North Augusta is 2-0 and was No. 5 in Class AAAA entering last week. The Yellow Jackets have started strong with a host of talented skill players to beat Lakeside and Evans.

Lexington is 3-0 with wins over West Florence, A.C. Flora and Brookland-Cayce. Its most recent victory over Brookland-Cayce came in double overtime.

The game may no longer have region implications, but it continues to be hard fought. Lexington defended its home turf last year, 22-20, while North Augusta last picked up a win in the series in 2014, 21-7. The scores are often close and have a history of being offensive shootouts.
