Area schools hold firm in latest prep polls

The area’s ranked schools held firm to their spots in the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll.


Thomson maintained its spot at No. 2 in Class AAAA after a tough 14-13 win at Effingham County this past week. The Bulldogs moved to 2-0 ahead of a home showdown with Jefferson on Friday. The Dragons are ranked fourth in the same classification.

Burke County moved up one spot to No. 9 in Class AAAA after beating Statesboro 42-27 on the road this past week. The Bears are now 2-0 with a home game against Washington County on Friday.

In Class AA, Screven County stayed at No. 5 while region rival Jefferson County stayed at No. 6. The Gamecocks had an open week and the Warriors beat Lakeside 33-0.

Swainsboro picked up an impressive 26-7 victory over Emanuel County Institute this past week and was rewarded with votes in Class AA.

In the latest South Carolina Prep Media Poll, South Aiken took a hit while North Augusta continued its upward charge.

The Thoroughbreds dropped several spots to No. 7 in Class AAAA after a one-point loss at White Knoll. The Yellow Jackets moved up to No. 5 with a 35-23 win over Evans.

Strom Thurmond is No. 6 in Class AAA after routing Aiken, while Barnwell continued to move up at No. 2 in Class AA. The Warhorses beat Blackville-Hilda 42-0.

Williston-Elko is No. 7 and Wagener-Salley is No. 8 in Class A.
