Thomson and Jefferson are quickly becoming familiar opponents between a regular-season series and the playoffs.
A thrilling series between the two state-ranked programs continues this week when the Bulldogs play host to the Dragons on Friday in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Brickyard.
Thomson enters 2-0 and No. 2 in Class AAAA. Jefferson is 2-0 and No. 4 in the same classification. Both feature strong running games and physical fronts capable of wearing down an opponent, and neither makes many mistakes among its skill players.
The two started a regular-season series last year when Thomson went on the road and beat Jefferson 42-20 in an early-September matchup. The two teams met again three months later in the state semifinals at Thomson, and the Bulldogs won 27-6 to advance to the championship game.
Thomson owns the all-time mark 8-2-2 dating to 1949. For the Bulldogs to make it nine victories, they’ll again need to rely on the running game of Tyrek Braswell and Bubba Murray, while the defense will need to contain Jefferson’s Colby Wood, considered one of the state’s top running backs.
