Aquinas and Laney met for the first time 50 years ago in a game with historical significance.
This time, the two will match up and recognize that first meeting for its importance beyond football.
Aquinas will play host to Laney in the The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The two enter at 0-1 after opening-week losses to state-ranked opponents.
The Irish fell to Prince Avenue Christian, 35-17, while the Wildcats dropped the opener to Thomson, 50-0. Records were the same a year ago when the two met and Aquinas walked off with a 19-18 win on a 44-yard field goal by Crimmins Hankinson as time expired.
This season’s game marks the 50th anniversary of the first integrated game in Richmond County. The two played in September 1967 at Richmond Academy’s stadium with Laney winning 30-0, and the Wildcats won the next four meetings until last year’s thriller.
There will be halftime festivities to commemorate the occasion and recognize players and coaches from both teams.
