Parker Sewell turned to a herd of teammates barreling their way toward him, and he stretched out his arms in anticipation.
Sewell soon found himself at the bottom of a dogpile. He felt a teammate’s spikes while in the pile, but he didn’t mind.
Greenbrier rallied in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Lakeside 5-4 and walk off with a region title.
“It’s kind of unreal,” Sewell said. “I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t feel when I hit first. It’s just something you can’t explain.”
Trailing 4-2 going to the bottom of the seventh and staring down the possibility of a rubber game Friday for a region championship, Greenbrier sent six batters to the plate and all six reached.
Eric Jenkins doubled to put two in scoring position with no outs. After an intentional walk loaded the bases and put the winning run on, Hayden Harrison singled home two to tie the game at four.
Lakeside again intentionally walked the bases loaded, this time for Sewell, who laced a single to the left-center gap on a full count for the winning run.
“We tell them, keep competing and battling and good things will happen,” Greenbrier coach Jason Osborn said. “He came through with a big hit right there. He stepped up for us and brought us home a region title.”
The Greenbrier (21-6, 11-3) victory clinched the Region 3-AAAAAA championship and No. 1 seed for the playoffs, while Lakeside (15-9, 8-6) falls into a battle with Evans and Heritage for seeding purposes.
The Wolfpack scored two in the third on a Garrett Marchman RBI single and Matthew Chester walk with the bases loaded. The Panthers responded with a three-run fourth on a two-run double by Chase Frady and sacrifice fly RBI from Austin Matthews.
Lakeside held the lead through the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh on a Jacob Hardin RBI single.
Sewell, John Waters and Jackson Rosier each had two hits for Greenbrier. Eric Becker was the lone Lakeside batter to record two hits.
The loss marred a strong effort from Lakeside’s Davis Cook, a sophomore who allowed two runs on six hits through six innings before running out of gas in the seventh.
