Josey ousted in second round

DUBLIN, Ga. --- Ken Taylor had a game-high 30 points and East Laurens outscored Josey by 16 points at the free-throw line to defeat the Eagles 70-64 Tuesday night in the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class AA state playoffs.

 

Josey made two more total field goals than East Laurens, but the host Falcons were 21 of 26 at the free throw line while the Eagles were only 5 of 6.

Chris Cephus added 13 points and Terrance Lewis chipped in 12 for East Laurens.

Patrick Meyers scored 17 points to lead Josey, which ends the season 26-4. Trumaine Jenkins and Keith Crump added 10 apiece for the Eagles.

The game was tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter before East Laurens outscored Josey 28-20 in the second quarter to open up a 45-37 halftime lead.

The Eagles outscored the Fal-cons 14-8 in the third quarter to pull within 53-51 entering the final period, but were outscored 17-13 in the fourth quarter.

DUBLIN 63, SWAINSBORO 50

In Swainsboro, Ga., Dublin outscored Swainsboro 18-4 in the third quarter to break open a close game and went on to beat the Tigers in the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class AA state playoffs.

Swainsboro, which ends the season 17-10, trailed only 27-24 at the half before Dublin's third-quarter tear made it a 45-28 game entering the final period.

Rashard Smith scored 17 points to lead Dublin. Trent Barnes and Tawaski King added 12 each for the Fighting Irish.

Swainsboro's Tony Mitchell, who will play for Alabama next season, led all scorers with 26 points. Byron Foots added 11 for the Tigers.

Dublin made only one more field goal than Swainsboro, but the Fighting Irish were 21 of 30 from the free-throw line, while the Tigers were only 10 of 21.

PINEWOOD PREP 75, AUGUSTA CHRISTIAN 59

In Sumter, S.C., third-ranked Pinewood Prep outscored Augusta Christian 15-2 in the first quarter and went on to beat the Lions in the quarterfinals of the South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA state playoffs.

Tyler Bourdo scored 22 points for Augusta Christian, which ends the season 19-11. Jaiden Brandt added 12 for the Lions, all on 3-pointers. Bourdo made three 3-pointers.
