Frank Booker hit five 3-pointers to get 32 points as Westside beat Thomson 64-56 in the semifinals of the Region 3-AAA Tournament at Josey High School on Friday night.
The Patriots advanced to face Josey in the boys championship game. Westside, the North subdivision’s No. 1 seed, split two meetings with the Eagles this season.
The Patriots (19-6) went ahead by double digits in a hurry early and were up by what seemed like a comfortable margin before the Bulldogs tried to charge back in the fourth period.
Thomson (21-5) got as close as five points at 57-52 on a Ronkeem Sallywhite 3-pointer but had to settle for a third-place game against Washington County. Sallywhite hit four 3-pointers in the game – two came in the fourth quarter – and scored 15 points.
But Booker and Ronald Campbell scored big baskets late to push the advantage back to a safer status for a bit. The Bulldogs then tried to continue to rally but missed a few 3-pointers in the final minute.
WESTSIDE GIRLS 50, CROSS CREEK 38
The Lady Patriots forced turnovers to get separation in the fourth quarter to set up a game against unbeaten Washington County for the region title.
After Tatyana Dumas beat the third-quarter buzzer with a basket for a 32-30 lead, Westside (23-3) outscored Cross Creek 18-8 in the fourth quarter.
Jahmia Bradley was often the finisher after steals, making three baskets in the fourth to finish with 22 points.
Jasmine Kilgore had 17 points for the Lady Razorbacks, who had won the season’s previous two meetings but will have to settle for a consolation game against Hephzibah.
Cross Creek is 21-6.
