Thomson 63, Washington County 54

John Atkins came up with clutch scores near the rim as Thomson answered Washington County’s rally attempt and held on for a 63-54 win on Saturday in the boys third-place game at the Region 3-AAA Tournament at Josey High School.

Atkins scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter.

A.J. Gray hit a 3-pointer for Washington County to close the fourth-quarter gap to 50-48. The Golden Hawks had been down 10 at the half.

But Atkins was strong underneath, getting three field goals and hitting five of six free-throw attempts in the final period. He matched teammate Ronkeem Sallywhite with 17 points.

With the win, the Bulldogs (22-5) get the region’s No. 3 seed for the Class AAA state tournament.

The Lady Rebels scored the first nine points in overtime to take the region’s No. 3 seed for the Class AAA state tournament.

After Hephzibah freshman Shashana Miller hit a 3-pointer to force overtime, Tiffani Harrison took over.

The senior scored nine of her team’s 11 points in overtime.

Hephzibah (17-7) had been up 10 in the third before Cross Creek battled back behind Tia Pullens, who scored 13 of her 14 points in the second half.

The Lady Razorbacks (21-7) then had a few chances to win in regulation but couldn’t convert.
