Burke County pull away late to oust Harlem

Down a point to begin the fourth quarter, Burke County scored 23 points in the final period to knock off Harlem 70-64 on Monday night at Josey.

Brandon Quarterman had 21 points, scoring eight of those in the fourth. He was one of three Burke County players to put up at least five points in the last quarter.

Harlem’s Reggie Reid scored 21 points in the second half, with his 11-point third quarter handing the Bulldogs a 48-47 lead after three periods. He finished with 28.

Reid and Alonzo Hill combined for 48 of Harlem’s 64 points.

Burke County advanced to play Westside, the No. 1 team out of the North, at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Thomson finally put away Hephzibah in the closing minutes, advancing to play Butler in the quarterfinals. Thomson and Butler haven’t played each other this season.

Thomson was winning from almost the opening tip Monday, with John Atkins scoring nine of his 13 points in the first quarter.

Though the Bulldogs led 15-9 after one quarter, Hephzibah remained close behind Tamyrik Field’s 17 points.

The game wasn’t safely in Thomson’s hands until the Bulldogs’ Biquavious Sturgis rushed down the floor, was fouled while making a basket and made the ensuing free throw.
The points extended Thomson’s lead to 13.
