Region cross country course showcased Wednesday

When Columbia County schools compete in the Region 2-AAAAA cross country meet in October, it will be interesting to see them all at their competitive best.

The meet will be at Wildwood Park, the site of Wednesday’s Greenbrier meet.

For some of the schools it was just a day of training and getting to know the course in advance.

Lakeside, the No. 2- ranked boys and girls squad in Class AAAAA, was one of those schools getting to know the course while preparing for a big meet in Atlanta on Saturday.

Sarah Bowles, who was the Class AAAAA girls Ga.MileSplit Runner of the Week after Lakeside’s first meet of the year, showed she will be a force to be reckoned with at the regional meet.

“I was just doing a tempo run, I guess,” said Bowles, who crossed the line first in 21 minutes, 17 seconds. “I was out there to get to know the course so I don’t make any wrong turns at the region meet.”

Evans’ girls were first overall as they placed runners in fourth through sixth place.

On the boys side, Evans sophomore Justin Weegar took first at the first meet at Wildwood Park on Sept. 8.

It was a three-mile course then, but had been adjusted to be a true 5K Wednesday. The length didn’t matter as Weegar placed first again, this time in 16:53.

“I was happy I finished first, but I wasn’t happy with my time,” said Weegar. “I do better when I have someone to push me.”

Weegar.will get that wish at the region meet facing the talented tandem from Lakeside in Chase Fowers and Christian Bowles, who have finished first and second and fourth and fifth, respectively, in the two meets they ran prior to Wednesday’s meet.

“I have bigger fish to fry this weekend, going up against the (AAAA) state champ and runner-up from last year.” said Fowers, who placed 27th. “If I can beat them, I’ll be in good shape for 5A.”

Overall, Greenbrier took first, placing runners in second-through-fourth place, while Evans finished second.
