If you're looking to find baseball in its purest form, you don't need to go any further than field two at the West Augusta baseball complex.

The teams that grace this field are full of some of the best young players in the state.

They're also some of the most energetic 9-10 year olds ever to set foot in Augusta.

These are the kids who still fumble the occasional ground ball and celebrate madly when they record an out. Usually their biggest concern is finding a batting helmet that fits them and most of them are more excited about receiving a free Coke after the game rather than actually winning the game.

``It's really fun and kind of different.'' said Buckhead's Jimmy Wheeler referring to playing in the State Tournament.

For most of the kids, this is their first time in traveling out of town to play in a ``big-time'' tournament. Hotels up and down Washington Road are packed with plenty of 9-10 year olds who are enjoying the high life.

The Midway All-Star team has decided to stay at the Fairfield Inn and they are exercising all of their rights as guests. ``The best part is swimming at the hotel,'' said Joseph Wilson who plays for Midway.

His teammate, Reagon Alexander, agrees, ``Yea, they have HBO, ESPN, and everything.''

Sam Pointer, the manager of Midway, doesn't mind bringing the kids here at all. ``It's been a very good experience and we've grown close, like a family.'' Not all of the players have chosen to stay at a hotel. Patrick Battey of Buckhead is staying at his grandmother's house who lives in Augusta. As a result the whole Buckhead team is benefiting.

``We've gone to go see some movies,'' said Battey. ``And my grandmother threw a party for the whole team.''

Mark Olsen, who also plays for Buckhead, seems to like having Battey at his grandmother's and said ``She's got a satellite over there!''

But what they're here to do is play baseball and that is the first thing that each of them will tell you is truly the best part of being here.

``It's been really fun and Jimmy got his first hit yesterday,'' said Battey referring to his teammate Wheeler.

``The first one while we've been here,'' Wheeler is quick to point out.

The 9-10 year olds league doesn't have a regional or national tournament so once this week winds down, the season is over for the kids.

``It's been a challenge,'' said Pointer. ``But one that I'm up to''
