 Despite suffering severe burns when a plane crashed into the building where she worked, Shirley Badke maintains a positive outlook on life. Jeff Badke (right) stayed by his wife's side, refusing to go home for 26 days after the accident.

SRS job creation initiative has yet

Community leaders have turned their eyes to Savannah River Regional Diversification Initiative, a year-old economic development group to help the region recover from SRS downsizing. But nearly three years after its inception, nobody can point to a single job that has been created with the $2 million spent.

Just as the 1996 Olympics features myriad competitions, from beach volleyball to judo, the accompanying Olympic Arts Festival presents a variety of art. The exhibits are an attempt to combine culture with competition.

If sculpturing was an Olympic event, two area artists would be top contenders. That's because Aiken resident Gretchen Lothrop and Brian Rust, an assistant art professor at Augusta State University, have joined the effort surrounding the 1996 Olympics to push art out of galleries and into the streets.

Butler rallies, tops Romanian in Olympic exhibition

To the chants of ``USA, USA'' after dispatching his Romanian opponent, Jim Butler issued a warning to any who would challenge him in his adopted hometown. ``Don't come into my house,'' the sweat-drenched Butler said after rallying to beat highly ranked Vasile Florea in the final game of a best of three match in a pre-Olympic tuneup at Augusta State Athletic Complex on Saturday.
