Local Voter Turnout may be Low

The Fourth of July holiday, the Olympics, the Motor Voter Act and uncontested races will all play a part in keeping voter turnout low in Tuesday's primaries, said elections officials in Richmond and Columbia counties.

Lynn Bailey, Richmond County Board of Elections executive director, is predicting a lower than usual turnout of 25 to 28 percent. The usual average is 37 percent.

Wearing a pair of hip boots, J. Vaun McArthur slowly waded against the quickly flowing stream in a remote corner of Savannah River Site.
 With a slight squint and a quick hand, the aquatic biologist with the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory located his prey and caught it with a net attached to a long plastic pole.

On those all-too-often hot and muggy Sunday nights at Lake Olmstead Stadium, it takes veteran leadership to win ballgames. That's exactly what the Augusta GreenJackets got as Sergio Mendez belted a two-run home run to give the Jackets a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Capital City Bombers.
