Barney Rubble, Barney the Dinosaur and politicians helped an estimated more than 10,000 spectators celebrate July Fourth in Patriots Park. Though temperatures were high, most folks talked and walked and ate comfortably. Bryce Pate, an eighth-grader at Lakeside Middle School, found a particularly cool spot in a dunking booth.

Lottery funds help ecology lab

AIKEN - Though it's nearly as difficult to explain as it is to pronounce, researchers at the Savannah River Ecology Lab are nonetheless grateful to be getting it. It's called a Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometer (FTMS) and promises to make detection of contaminants in environmental settings a great deal easier.

Six-run sixth leads to Bombers win

COLUMBIA - A six-run explosion by Capital City in the bottom of the sixth inning wiped out a 3-0 Augusta lead on Thursday night and led to the Bombers' 7-5 victory over the GreenJackets.

Augusta Tech begins search for new president

Jack Patrick is stepping down as Augusta Tech president, a job he's held since 1977. He swears he has no idea who might succeed him at Augusta Tech, but wagers some local names will appear among the applicants.
