When the 220-pounder completed his 4-0 win over Warner Robins’ Hunter Clark, it clinched the region dual title for the Greyhounds, bringing with it a trip to the state duals next week in Macon. The Demons got a pin in the 285-pound weight class to cut the Greyhounds’ final margin to 41-34.

It also meant that Grovetown, which defeated county rival Evans, 60-23, in the third-fourth place match, got to challenge Warner Robins to determine the second and final spot in the state competition. Had Warner Robins beaten Jones County, there wouldn’t have been an extra match. The Greyhounds beat the Warriors 54-21 two rounds earlier.

The Warriors were jumping at the chance to go to the state championship for the first time in the school’s five-year history, but it didn’t happen. The Demons led from the start, winning 47-25.

Grovetown had put itself in position to challenge by finishing second in one half of pool play with wins over Northside Warner Robins (69-12) and Lakeside (54-27) and the loss to Jones County.

“I’m proud of the boys today and what they did,” Warriors’ first-year head coach Jeremy Davis said. “From a team that didn’t even come to this tournament last year to come and take third, represent Columbia County as the highest place, I’m proud of the boys.”

Jones County head coach Jay Crook liked how Rooks wrestled.

“It was special because he’s (Rooks) a good wrestler and obviously if we won that, we were going to win the whole thing,” Crook said. “It’s our second region championship and it’s important to me because you want to go to state as a No. 1. You don’t want to go to state No. 2 because then you wrestle a better team.”
