Harlem, Grovetown open softball season with wins

GROVETOWN — Harlem High put its dominance on display while playing host to the season-opening Chick-fil-A Softball Classic on Friday night.

The Lady Bulldogs got the performances they expected from their three returning starters and younger players made an impact in a 10-2 win over Hart County at Patriots Park.

Sophomore standout Amber Garrett, the 2012 Region 3-AA Pitcher of the Year, picked up where she left off, pitching a complete-game, three-hitter while striking out eight. Senior Lindsey Stokes, the 2012 Region 3-AA Player of the Year, backed her with two hits while driving in four runs.

“Amber threw a lot of pitches tonight and wasn’t on her game, but she still put us in great shape to win,” said coach Mike Leverett, who was happy with the way his new starters performed.

“We had young girls lead the hitting,” Leverett said of freshman Madison Summers and junior Ashley Lunz, who each had two hits. “If they get on base, we’ll have a good offensive threat.”

Grovetown overcame a 9-1 deficit to beat Washington-Wilkes 18-9 in a run-rule shortened five innings.

The Lady Warriors scored two in the fourth to tie it and then plated eight in the fifth to end it. They had 16 walks and every player in the lineup scored. Elizabeth Metress paced the team with two hits.
